The Taliban publicly lashed a man in Zabul province on Saturday, accusing him of theft, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court. The individual received 20 lashes and was sentenced to one and a half years in prison.
The Taliban’s use of corporal punishment has been widely condemned by the international community and human rights organizations, including the UN Human Rights Council. Since taking power in Afghanistan, the Taliban has subjected around 700 people, including women, to such punishments across various provinces.
A tally compiled by Amu indicates that over the past three years, the Taliban has flogged more than 611 individuals, including over 108 women, as part of its judicial practices.
