A nationwide polio vaccination campaign commenced across Afghanistan on Saturday, according to Polio Free Afghanistan, an organization dedicated to eradicating the disease.
The group has urged parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated, emphasizing the importance of community participation in the effort to eliminate polio.
Recent data from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health indicates that six cases of polio have been reported in 2023. These cases were identified in the Nangarhar province, specifically in the districts of Khogyani, Behsud, Bati Kot, Durbaba, Kot, and Nazian.
Polio Free Afghanistan has not disclosed the number of children targeted in this latest vaccination drive.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries where polio is still endemic, highlighting the continued challenge of eradicating the virus in the region.
