Natural disasters in mid-July claim 58 lives in Afghanistan: OCHA

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the death toll from natural disasters on July 15-16 in Afghanistan has risen to 58 people.

According to OCHA’s report, severe rainfall and flash floods impacted multiple districts in the provinces of Badakhshan, Baghlan, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, and Nuristan in eastern and northeastern Afghanistan.

The disasters left 380 people injured, OCHA noted. “So far, joint assessment teams (JATs) have evaluated 1,925 affected families across Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman provinces; further assessments are ongoing,” the UN agency stated.

The report further revealed that the floods destroyed 550 tents in the Omari camp near the reception center at Torkham. “Severe damage has also been sustained to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities,” the report added.

The affected households urgently need access to food, shelter, health, and WASH services, including clean drinking water. “Protection and health risks are a concern for those residing in the open or under makeshift shelters. Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services are also required for the most affected families,” the report stated.

According to OCHA, the Taliban-run Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) distributed 100,000 Afghanis to each of the 27 families who lost relatives and between 10,000 and 50,000 Afghanis to the injured.
