Women’s rights group says Doha meeting neglects will of Afghan citizens

A group of Afghan women protestors, known as “Junbish Zanan Takhar,” argue that the upcoming third Doha meeting is a “deal” that neglects the will of the Afghan people.

In a statement, the movement accused the U.N. of “whitewashing” the Taliban. “The U.N., the Human Rights Commission, and some countries in the world have been trying to whitewash and recognize the Taliban,” the statement read. The protestors contended that the international community should bring the Taliban to justice rather than engage in negotiations with them.

The third round of the Doha meeting is scheduled to take place on Sunday, with envoys from around 30 countries and institutions in attendance. Stéphane Dujarric, the U.N. Secretary-General’s spokesman, informed reporters that the U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, will travel to Qatar to chair the meeting.

Dujarric added that human rights and women’s rights will be discussed on the third day of the meeting with representatives of Afghan women and civil society activists.
