KABUL — Taliban publicly flogged three people in the provinces of Sar-e Pul and Paktia, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.
In Sar-e Pul province, two individuals were punished for “sodomy” last Monday.
One received 21 lashes and a one-year prison sentence, while the other was flogged 31 times and sentenced to six months in prison, the court’s statement said.
In a separate incident, another individual was lashed 36 times and sentenced to one year in prison for “inappropriate behavior,” the court noted, without providing further details about the alleged crime.
Earlier, the Taliban punished 63 people, including 14 women, in a single day in Sar-e Pul province, actions that drew sharp criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations. Both the U.N. special rapporteur and Amnesty International condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment.
