Tehran hosts second round of regional contact group meeting on Afghanistan

TEHRAN — Tehran is hosting the second round of the Regional Contact Group meeting, known as the Moscow Format, on Saturday, with participants exchanging views on the situation in Afghanistan.

Iranian media reported that representatives from Pakistan, China, and Russia attended the meeting. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani emphasized that the participants aim to find solutions to alleviate Afghanistan’s current problems.

“We should not only explain the existing problems in Afghanistan but should also outline the paths to overcome these challenges,” he said.

The Taliban disclosed that its representatives did not attend the negotiations.

The Moscow Format, founded by Russia to address Afghanistan’s issues among regional countries, includes Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Some analysts view the Moscow Format as an effort by regional countries to counter Western influence, particularly that of the United States.

Meanwhile, a peace and justice movement has called for intra-Afghan negotiations to be the main agenda of this meeting, as well as the upcoming Doha summit on Afghanistan.
