UNAMA chief Otunbayeva calls for protection, support of journalists in Afghanistan

The UN special envoy for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Roza Otunbayeva, emphasized the critical role of journalists in keeping the nation informed and prosperous. In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, Otunbayeva praised journalists across Afghanistan who risk their safety to report vital news.

“Journalism is essential for an informed and prosperous nation, and it supports vital areas such as education, environment, health, economy, and good governance for all Afghans,” Otunbayeva said.

Additionally, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) shared that Otunbayeva delivered her World Press Freedom Day message via community Radio Mili Paiwand in Logar province.

The post on X highlighted her opportunity to engage with female reporters and discuss the importance of freedom of expression, especially amid the global environmental crisis.

World Press Freedom Day is observed globally on May 3. Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan’s media landscape has faced a severe crisis, with reports of journalists being detained daily.
