The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that Switzerland has donated an additional $1.7 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.

This latest contribution was reported on Tuesday by OCHA via its X social media account, bringing Switzerland’s total donations to the fund to $19.7 million since 2016.

Switzerland has previously supported the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.

The donation arrives as OCHA highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan, with 23 million people requiring assistance this year.

According to OCHA, women constitute 52% of those in need.

The crisis in Afghanistan has been deepened by the return of Afghan refugees and a severe winter, resulting in critical shortages of housing, food, and healthcare for thousands returning from neighboring countries.

Since last October, Pakistan has deported nearly half a million Afghan refugees, leaving them with lack of shelter and food as they return to the country.
