Israel launches ‘heavy bombardment’ on Gaza overnight

Israel bombarded Gaza with a series of explosions late Sunday, marking a significant escalation in conflict, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The agency described the attacks on the coastal enclave as “unprecedented.”

Witnesses in southern Israel reported seeing flares and hearing the blasts emanating from Gaza.

The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza reported that the ongoing conflict, which erupted on Oct. 7 after Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, has resulted in the death of more than 9,770 Palestinians.

The initial attack by Hamas killed 1,400 and led to more than 240 being taken hostage.
