Iranian team surveys Helmand River for water resource evaluation

Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the Iranian ambassador to Kabul, confirmed on Sunday that a delegation of Iranian experts recently conducted an assessment of water resources in Helmand province.

He added that the team is currently in Kabul, ready to compile a report based on their findings.

Taliban has not yet released a statement regarding the Iranian delegation’s visit to Helmand province.

This is the first time an Iranian delegation visits the Dehraud area in Helmand province, the source of the Helmand River’s water that flows toward Iran.

Tensions have arisen between the Taliban and Iran over water rights stemming from the 1973 Helmand River Treaty. Iran asserts that the river has the capacity to supply water to their country, while the Taliban maintains that water resources in the river have significantly diminished.
