India avalanche kills six, injures 30: Police

At least six people were killed after an avalanche struck the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim on Tuesday police and local officials said as quoted by Reuters.

All six fatalities were tourists and at least 30 people were injured in the avalanche that took place in the Nathu La mountain pass, officials said.

The incident took place on the outskirts of Gangtok, the capital of the Himalayan state.

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that survivors were pulled from the snow and taken to hospital for treatment after the avalanche occurred along the Nathu La pass.

The mountain pass where the avalanche happened is along the border with China and is a major tourist destination.

Rescue operations were underway in the area.
