A ceasefire between Taliban and Pakistan has been reached in parts of eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, according to local sources, but the agreement was negotiated without the presence of Taliban officials, raising questions about its durability.
Residents told Amu TV that the halt in fighting followed mediation by tribal elders from both sides of the border, rather than formal talks between Taliban and Pakistani officials. The agreement, they said, remains tentative and has not been finalized.
Neither Taliban nor Pakistani officials have publicly commented on the reported ceasefire.
The development comes amid a series of cross-border clashes that have intensified since late February along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier, particularly in Kunar and neighboring Nuristan province. Local sources have previously reported a similar ceasefire in Nuristan, also brokered by community elders and likewise reached without direct involvement from Taliban officials.
Tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have grown in recent months, with both sides trading accusations over security and sovereignty. Pakistani officials have repeatedly alleged that militant groups operate from Afghanistan’s territory and carry out attacks inside Pakistan.
In a interview with Geo News, Pakistan’s defense minister, Khawaja Asif, accused India of using Afghanistan’s soil to advance its interests against Islamabad, claiming that proxy groups were active across the border.
Taliban have consistently denied those allegations, saying Afghanistan’s territory is not used for attacks against other countries, including Pakistan.
The Durand Line, the disputed boundary dividing Afghanistan and Pakistan, has long been a source of friction. While Pakistan recognizes it as an international border, successive Afghan governments, including the Taliban, have rejected that designation.
This informal agreement on ceasefire comes as Taliban reported that at least three civilians were killed in Pakistan shelling on Dangam district, Kunar province, on Sunday, May 4.
