Nazera Rashidi, journalist, released from Taliban custody

Nai in Exile says Rashidi left her home last Wednesday after receiving a phone call and was subsequently detained by Taliban.

Nazera Rashidi, a journalist detained by the Taliban in the northeastern province of Kunduz, has been released after nearly a month in custody, her relatives confirmed on Friday.

Rashidi was arrested in Kunduz last month. The Taliban police command in Kunduz had previously said her detention was linked to what they described as a “criminal incident,” without providing further details.

The Taliban police also said that Rashidi had been arrested with four other women.

Taliban have not commented publicly on her release.

The detention and release come amid continued concern from rights groups over the treatment of journalists in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, with reporters facing arrests, intimidation and restrictions on their work. Taliban have detained and imprisoned dozens of journalists and media workers over the past four years.
