House collapse in southern Afghanistan kills four

A house collapse in the southern province of Kandahar killed four members of the same family, local Taliban officials said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Daman district of Kandahar, where a house collapsed in the village of Ghaibi Qalachah, the Taliban police command said in a statement. The victims were an adult man and three children. The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.

The incident comes less than two weeks after another house collapse in Kandahar’s Dand district killed six children, underscoring the risks posed by fragile housing amid harsh weather conditions.

Several provinces across Afghanistan have been hit in recent days by heavy snowfall, rain and strong winds, which have caused dozens of deaths and damaged homes.

Earlier, the Talibab-run disaster management authority said at least 61 people had been killed and 110 injured by severe weather in 15 provinces. The affected areas include Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Bamyan, Daykundi, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Herat, Ghor, Badghis, Faryab, Sar-e Pol, Balkh, Samangan and Nuristan.

The authority said 458 houses had been fully or partially destroyed, 360 families affected and hundreds of livestock killed as a result of the recent storms and snowfall.
