France’s Socialist Party has nominated an Afghan-French citizen as part of its electoral ticket for the upcoming municipal elections in the town of Alfortville, the party’s local office said.
The party formally launched its campaign on Tuesday, introducing Reza Rezaii, who was born in Afghanistan, as a member of its slate for the March vote. Rezaii arrived in France as a refugee in 2000 and has since become a prominent young figure within the Socialist Party in Alfortville, party officials said.
Rezaii is also a senior member of a local social organization, La Cabane des Amis, which in recent years has hosted several public discussions on the situation in Afghanistan.
Municipal elections in Alfortville are scheduled to be held in two rounds in March, with the mayor and the municipal leadership to be elected for a six-year term.
If the Socialist Party retains control of the town hall, Rezaii would serve as one of the senior members of the municipal leadership for the next six years. The Socialist Party currently governs Alfortville following the previous municipal election.
