India urges its nationals to leave Iran

India’s embassy in Tehran has advised Indian nationals to leave Iran by available means, citing the evolving security situation in the country, according to an advisory issued on Wednesday.

The embassy said the guidance applies to Indian citizens currently in Iran, including students, pilgrims, businesspeople and tourists, and follows an earlier advisory issued by the Indian government on Jan. 5.

It urged those remaining in Iran to exercise caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the embassy and monitor local media for updates. Indian nationals were also asked to keep their travel and identity documents readily available.

The advisory provided emergency contact numbers and said Indians who have not yet registered with the embassy should do so online. Families in India were asked to assist with registration in cases where internet disruptions prevent access inside Iran.

The advisory comes amid ongoing nationwide protests in Iran and a sweeping internet shutdown, which have prompted several countries to issue travel warnings or evacuation advice for their citizens.
