Afghan journalist detained by police in Pakistan

Obaidullah Ahmadi, a freelance journalist from Afghanistan, has been detained by police in Islaabad, sources familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

The reason for his detention was not immediately clear. Pakistani police have not commented on the arrest.

The detention comes amid an intensified campaign by Pakistani authorities to conduct house-to-house checks in Islamabad aimed at arresting and forcibly deporting Afghan migrants.

Dozens of journalists from Afghanistan have been detained during the campaign. Many of the journalists have previously said they face threats from the Taliban and fear for their lives if forcibly returned.

Pakistan has stepped up efforts in recent months to detain and expel undocumented Afghan nationals, a move that rights groups say has placed vulnerable groups, including journalists, at heightened risk.
