Kazakhstan’s grain exports to Afghanistan rose sharply last year, with shipments to the country up 63% from the previous year, Kazakh media reported on Friday, citing data from the national railway operator.

According to figures from Kazakhstan Railways, the increase was recorded by the end of 2025, reversing a decline in exports to Afghanistan in 2024.

The data showed that during the first months of the new marketing year, from September to December 2025, grain exports to Afghanistan were 71% higher than in the same period a year earlier, signalling a rapid recovery and strengthening of the trade route.

Kazakh media said the rise formed part of a broader, decade-high performance in Kazakhstan’s grain shipments, with Afghanistan once again emerging as one of the key destination markets.

Afghanistan has been seeking to diversify sources of essential imports, particularly from Central Asia, following disruptions linked to closures at border crossings with Pakistan. Kazakhstan is among the region’s major grain exporters.
