Three Taliban members were wounded in infighting between Taliban intelligence forces and guards at a provincial hospital in the northeastern province of Badakhshan, local sources said on Sunday.

The incident took place around midnight on Saturday in Faizabad, the provincial capital, after a dispute erupted between a Taliban intelligence unit commander, identified by sources as Razuddin, and security officials assigned to the hospital.

The argument escalated into an exchange of gunfire between the two sides, leaving three people wounded, the sources said.

Taliban have not commented on the incident.

Internal disputes among Taliban members have periodically surfaced since they returned to power in August 2021, often linked to rivalries between different security units, command structures and local authorities. While the Taliban present themselves as a unified force, analysts and local sources say tensions persist at provincial and district levels.

Badakhshan, a mountainous province bordering Tajikistan and China, has been particularly sensitive due to its strategic location, smuggling routes and the presence of multiple Taliban security branches, including intelligence units and local armed guards. The province has also seen sporadic unrest and reports of internal disagreements over authority and resources.

Taliban have rarely acknowledged internal clashes publicly.
