Winter cold worsens travel problems on unfinished Ghazni road, residents say

Residents of Jaghori district in Afghanistan’s central Ghazni province say winter conditions are making travel increasingly difficult on an unfinished road linking the district to the provincial capital, a project they say has remained incomplete for years.

Residents told Amu that the unpaved stretch between Muqur and Ghazni becomes especially hazardous in winter, slowing the movement of patients, families and goods.

“Our main road to Ghazni is steep and rough, and the road is still unpaved. Now that winter has arrived, people face serious problems,” said Abdul Ahad, a resident. “This road was contracted in 2007 but remains in the same condition.”

Another resident said the route poses daily risks. “From Qarabagh to Jaghori, the road is all dirt. People travel with great difficulty. This is our biggest problem,” he said.

Some residents urged the Taliban authorities to ensure snow removal and maintain access during the winter months.

“We ask the authorities to keep the roads open so travellers are not stranded,” said Hassanullah, a resident. “This road has many passes, and snow must be cleared on time.”

Residents said the lack of a proper road has made daily life harder and raised the cost and difficulty of transporting goods and essential supplies.
