Afghanistan on Tuesday ended Day 2 of their four-day Test match against Zimbabwe on 34 for 1, still 198 runs behind after a commanding first-innings performance by the hosts.
After winning the toss and batting first on Monday, Oct. 20, Afghanistan were bowled out for just 127 in 32.3 overs. Despite an aggressive 37 off 37 balls from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the visitors failed to build lasting partnerships, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers applying consistent pressure throughout the innings.
Zimbabwe responded strongly with the bat, closing Day 1 at 130 for 2, already ahead by three runs. They went on to post a total of 359 in their first innings by mid-afternoon on Tuesday, gaining a commanding 232-run lead.
Afghanistan’s Zia Sharifi was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 7 wickets for 97 runs in 32 overs — a career-best performance that helped limit the damage as the home side looked set for an even larger total.
In their second innings, Afghanistan made a cautious start. Ibrahim Zadran (25 not out) and Gurbaz (7 not out) saw the team to 34 for 1 at stumps, with 12 overs negotiated late in the day.
With two days remaining, Afghanistan face a steep climb to overturn the deficit. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, remain firmly in control, building on their momentum from the opening day and applying pressure on both sides of the ball.
The match is part of a bilateral red-ball series hosted by Zimbabwe, featuring the senior national teams in a format that has become increasingly rare in the modern cricket calendar.
