TASS: Moscow Format participants to discuss Afghanistan’s national security

Delegates attending the Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan are set to discuss the country’s national security and prospects for regional cooperation, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

According to the report, representatives from Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Taliban are taking part in the discussions.

The meeting, the seventh round of the Moscow Format consultations on Afghanistan, is being held Tuesday in the Russian capital. TASS said participants are expected to discuss potential steps to promote “national reconciliation” in Afghanistan and expand engagement between Kabul and neighboring countries across multiple sectors.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said earlier that a delegation from Belarus was also invited to the talks. The main participants are attending at the level of special presidential envoys and senior officials, she said.

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi traveled to Moscow on Monday to join the session.

Sources previously told Amu that before his departure, Muttaqi met with Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada in Kandahar, where he received directives regarding his participation in the Moscow Format meeting and an upcoming visit to India.
