Mountaineers in Ghazni and Herat provinces have completed successful climbs as part of efforts to promote outdoor sports and highlight the country’s natural and historical attractions.
In Ghazni, an 11-member team from the Diyar-e Sanai mountaineering club scaled the Zanjan mountain range, reaching an altitude of 2,726 meters, the General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports said.
The one-day expedition was organized to encourage mountaineering, celebrate World Tourism Day, and prepare athletes for upcoming competitions.
Separately, a six-member team from Herat’s Dondar Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club climbed the 3,100-meter-high Khwaja Abdul peak in the Band-e Sabzak area on Friday, Oct. 3, in cooperation with Herat’s provincial sports department and the Mountaineering Federation.
The sports department said the Herat climbers completed the ascent via the ridge route from Band-e Sabzak to the wooden mosque — a first for the province’s mountaineering community.
Both climbs are part of a broader effort by Afghan athletes to revive interest in adventure sports amid ongoing economic and social challenges in the country.
