India sends new shipment of aid to Kunar quake survivors

India has sent a new shipment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan for survivors of last month’s deadly earthquake.

The latest consignment, which arrived in Kabul via Iran’s Chabahar port, included three containers of essential supplies, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The ministry said the shipment contained food items, water purification devices, protein powder, metal sheets, bedding, hygiene kits, water tanks, generators, family tents, blankets, essential medicines and other medical equipment.

India had earlier sent two rounds of emergency assistance. The first shipment, delivered Sept. 1, included 1,000 tents. A second shipment, sent Sept. 2, contained 21 tons of supplies such as blankets, tents, hygiene kits, water tanks, purification systems, medicines, wheelchairs and water purification tablets.

More than 2,200 people were killed and over 3,600 injured when the 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kunar province on Aug. 31, making it one of the deadliest quakes in Afghanistan in decades.

Many families in the affected areas have complained about delays and shortages in the delivery of aid.
