Two Taliban members were killed and another wounded in an attack on a Taliban night patrol convoy in Helmand province, local sources told Amu.

The attack took place Sunday night in the Regi area of Musa Qala district, the sources said.

According to locals, the Taliban later detained and killed two men linked to Qayum Zakir, a deputy defense minister in the Taliban administration.

Taliban have not commented on the incident.

Sources said that since the Taliban’s ban on opium cultivation, armed opposition groups have maintained a covert presence in northern districts of Helmand. They added that such resistance has emerged in several areas, fueled largely by what they described as the Taliban’s “discriminatory” enforcement of the poppy ban.

The attack comes days after Zakir visited parts of Helmand to address security concerns.
