Road accident kills six in northern Afghanistan

The accident in Faryab.

Six people were killed and six others injured in a traffic accident on Sunday morning in northern Faryab Province, Taliban police command said in a statement.

The crash occurred in the provincial capital, Maimana, the statement said, adding that women and children were among the victims.

The incident comes amid a string of deadly accidents on Afghanistan’s poorly maintained roads. Two days earlier, four people were killed in Samangan Province, and three days ago, nine others died in a crash in Baghlan.

Road accidents have surged in recent weeks across several provinces, claiming dozens of lives. Taliban officials and residents blame reckless driving, overloaded vehicles and deteriorating infrastructure for the rising toll.
