The body of an Afghan fighter who went missing during the Soviet war in the 1980s has been discovered in northeastern Badakhshan province after 38 years, local sources said.
Residents said the remains of the man, identified as Juma Khan, were uncovered Saturday in Nusai Darwaz district after mountain ice melted.
He disappeared during battles with Soviet forces nearly four decades ago in the Darband Vidghaz area, between Kuf and Nusai districts.
Witnesses said the body was largely intact and still recognizable. Relatives and local villagers buried him at the site where he was found.
The discovery has revived memories of Afghanistan’s devastating war against the Soviet occupation, a conflict that left lasting scars on communities across the country.
The former Soviet Union forces left Afghanistan in February 1989 after more than nine years of war.
