Afghanistan: 22 injured as quake hits Nangarhar

At least 22 people, including women and children, were injured in a powerful earthquake that struck parts of Nangarhar province overnight, local Taliban officials said Friday.

The injuries occurred in the villages of Mazh Gandol, Suntan and Amalay in Dara-i-Noor district, which was among the hardest-hit areas. A 6.5-magnitude quake shook eastern Afghanistan late Thursday night, damaging or destroying numerous homes in Dara-i-Noor and Kuz Kunar districts.

Taliban governor’s office said in a statement that several of the injured received on-site treatment, while others were transferred to nearby health centers. Their conditions are reported to be stable.

The statement added that they continue to assess the damage of the quake in the region, where infrastructure and housing are particularly vulnerable to seismic activity.
