Iran’s charge d’affaires to Afghanistan, Alireza Bikdeli, has traveled to Kunar province to deliver aid and assess the needs of communities affected by the recent earthquake, Iran’s diplomatic mission in Kabul said Tuesday.
The mission said the first shipment of Iranian relief supplies — 80 tons of flour and cooking oil — was handed over to Taliban authorities for distribution to survivors. During his visit, Bikdeli met with representatives of the Afghan Red Crescent Society and provincial officials from Kunar and Nangarhar to review relief operations.
Bikdeli said Iran “has always stood by Afghanistan in difficult times” and reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to supporting those affected by the disaster.
The 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, killing more than 1,400 people and injuring over 3,000, according to Taliban officials. Kunar province suffered the worst damage, with thousands of homes destroyed and hospitals overwhelmed.
