New private radio station launches in Kandahar

A new private radio station called Cheragh has begun broadcasting in Kandahar, the Afghanistan Free Journalists’ Union said.

The station operates on 90.9 FM and is managed by Mohib Mushtaq. He said Cheragh’s signal reaches not only Kandahar city but also remote districts of the province.

Mushtaq said the station will broadcast 18 hours a day in its initial phase, offering around 20 programs each week on a variety of topics.

The journalists’ union said the launch of Cheragh brings the total number of radio stations in Kandahar to 14, of which 12 are privately owned.

The opening comes as local media in Kandahar face mounting restrictions. Taliban authorities have banned the broadcast of images of living beings — meaning stations cannot air video clips of people and instead often use photos of buildings or scenery as stand-ins.
