The Taliban governor’s office in Herat confirmed on Friday that 76 people were killed in Tuesday evening’s traffic accident in the western province of Herat.
The crash occurred in Guzara district on the Herat-Islam Qala Highway and included 17 children among the dead.
Sources said the victims include 37 men, 21 women and 18 children.
The accident happened when a bus carrying deported migrants from Iran bound for Kabul collided with a truck and a motorcycle before bursting into flames.
Further details about the victims and their nationalities were not immediately available.
Deadly road accidents are common in Afghanistan, where highways are often poorly maintained and traffic rules are rarely enforced. Many accidents happen due to drivers’ carelessness.
