Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, or DABS, the state-run power distributor, said on Monday it has signed an agreement with two private firms to generate 160 megawatts of electricity using coal.

The MoU was signed with Turkey’s 77 Company and the Afghan firm Zularistan, DABS CEO Abdul Bari Omar said at the signing ceremony.

Omar added that over the past year, Breshna has also launched several solar and wind energy projects across various provinces, with work on those initiatives still ongoing. He expressed hope that completion of the projects would help address the country’s chronic electricity shortages.

On Sunday, DABS also signed a separate contract with investors from Uzbekistan valued at $243 million for large-scale power transmission and distribution projects.

According to DABS data, only 40% of Afghanistan’s population currently has access to electricity.
