A local Taliban commander and his brother have been arrested in the northeastern province of Takhar on charges of kidnapping, local sources told Amu on Monday.
The arrests took place in the Nahr Chaman area of Taloqan, the provincial capital, where Taliban intelligence forces detained Najib, a local commander, along with his brother, the sources said.
Taliban intelligence also searched the commander’s home and disarmed several of his fighters during the operation, according to the sources.
Taliban officials in Takhar have not commented.
The incident follows a reported clash last week in Kunduz province, where two Taliban members were killed in a gunfight with their own intelligence forces during an attempted armed robbery, according to local accounts.
Since returning to power in August 2021, Taliban members have repeatedly been accused of involvement in killings, armed robberies, kidnappings and other crimes. In many cases, the group has denied the reports or prevented them from being made public.
Some Afghans say criminal activity in the country is increasingly being carried out by Taliban members themselves, turning those tasked with maintaining security into what they describe as “killers and thieves of the people’s property.”
