As mass deportations of Afghans continue, Iran expelled 4,806 migrants on Sunday, Aug. 10 — up from 3,366 the day before — the Taliban-run Commission for Refugees said Monday.
According to the commission, the migrants returned through the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province and the Pul-e-Abrisham crossing in Nimroz province on Sunday.
The Taliban said Pakistan also deported 784 Afghan migrants the same day via the Torkham, Angoor Adda and Spin Boldak crossings.
Figures reviewed by Amu TV from the commission show that between Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, Iran deported 55,038 Afghan migrants.
Earlier this week, Taliban Ministry of Refugees officials said at the ministry’s annual reporting meeting in Kabul that 1.8 million Afghans were expelled from Iran in the past three months — covering the Afghan calendar months of Saur, Jawza and Saratan.
The UN refugee agency said in a recent report that between Sept. 15, 2023, and June 30, 2024, nearly 1.2 million Afghans returned from Pakistan.
Despite the high numbers, both Iran and Pakistan have intensified deportations in recent weeks. Some returnees have reported facing “beatings, confiscation of property, inhumane treatment and humiliation” during their forced return.
