Local sources in Faryab province told Amu Thursday that Taliban authorities detained and brutally beat a young man without apparent cause in Pashtun Kot district.

The man, identified as Mohammad Azim, was seized and beaten in the Mian Dara market by a Taliban official who holds allegiance to Gul Ahmad Haqqani, the deputy intelligence chief in neighboring Jawzjan province, sources said.

A source said the Taliban official “used his military power under Haqqani’s authority” to assault Azim, striking him some 25 times.

Taliban have not commented on the incident.

This comes as according to multiple UN reports, Taliban have detained and tortured dozens of individuals over the past four years, most of them former government officials and activists.
