Taliban said on Sunday that Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in a phone call with Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi pledged to deport Afghan migrants in a “gradual and respectful” manner.
In a statement, Taliban said Muttaqi emphasized that the expulsion of Afghan nationals should be carried out “on a gradual basis and with full respect for human dignity.”
According to the statement, Araghchi responded by saying that the deportation process would proceed “in a phased and respectful way, to ensure migrants’ rights are not violated.”
Taliban said the two sides also discussed bilateral relations, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the recent spike in migrant deportations from Iran.
The statement comes as Iran has sharply increased the number of Afghan nationals being expelled in recent weeks. Many of those deported have reported mistreatment by Iranian authorities during the process.
Iran has not commented on the conversation between Araghchi and Muttaqi.
