The Taliban-led embassy in Tehran has announced a reduction in passport issuance fees for Afghan nationals residing in Iran, lowering the cost from $120 to $50, according to a statement issued Wednesday.
The embassy said the decision was made under the directive of Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s supreme leader, citing the “current situation and economic difficulties” faced by Afghan migrants in Iran.
The move comes amid a surge in forced deportations and increasing economic pressure on Afghan communities in the country. Iranian authorities have expelled hundreds of thousands of Afghans this year, prompting criticism from rights groups and concerns over the humanitarian toll.
While the fee reduction may ease some financial strain, many Afghan migrants remain wary of seeking consular services from Taliban-run diplomatic missions.
