Heavy rains and storm winds triggered flash floods in multiple districts of Khost Province on Friday morning, causing significant financial losses and at least one reported fatality, according to local sources.
In Nadershahkot District, two brothers were swept away by the floods. One of them died, while the other is receiving treatment at the provincial hospital in Khost, sources said.
In Spera District, the floodwaters inundated the Halabsat marketplace, destroying dozens of shops and inflicting severe damage on local businesses. Residents described widespread losses, with much of the area submerged in muddy torrents.
Taliban-run meteorological department issued a weather alert, urging residents to seek safety in elevated areas and avoid flood-prone zones during periods of heavy rainfall.
The flooding comes after earlier warnings about the risk of severe rainstorms and flash floods across several provinces in Afghanistan.
A local bridge, which had recently been constructed with funds raised by the community, was also damaged in the flood, residents said. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
