Irfan Siddiqui, chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, told reporters following a recent committee session that Afghanistan’s Taliban administration appeared increasingly receptive to Pakistan’s concerns over the TTP’s presence and operations inside Afghan territory.
“Only last year, 500 Afghans joined the TTP and fought inside Pakistan,” he said, describing the development as “extremely concerning.”
In a statement issued Sunday, the army said the fighting took place Saturday night in North Waziristan.
The ministry said the Pakistani delegation conveyed to Taliban officials that the TTP remains a “critical obstacle” to improving bilateral relations.
Sources said Khan conveyed messages from the Pakistani government on counterterrorism cooperation, border security, bilateral relations and broader regional stability.
The move comes in response to repeated requests from the Pakistani government, the report says.
Speaking during a briefing, Mr. Dar attributed the re-entry of 35,000 to 40,000 TTP fighters to poorly considered policies, including decisions reportedly made “over a cup of tea.”
