A group of activists from the Women’s Movement for Freedom issued a statement on Wednesday, urging the international community to acknowledge the existence of “gender apartheid” under the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, highlighting the increasing restrictions on women and girls.
The activists reported that the Taliban has detained numerous women over the past three years on various pretexts.
Despite “arbitrary detention” constituting a “violation of human rights” unless ordered by a competent court, the Taliban has normalized this practice, continuing these actions unabated, according to the movement.
Furthermore, the women condemned the Taliban’s exclusion of women and girls from all political, economic, social, and cultural sectors of society. They appealed to the international community and human rights organizations to recognize the situation as “gender apartheid” in Afghanistan.
