A residential block in Khan Younis, Gaza, faced a recent Israeli airstrike on Tuesday, resulting in the collapse of multiple buildings and casualties. Tawfik Abu Breika, an elderly resident whose home was struck, reported that there was no prior warning.
Walking amidst the rubble of twisted metal and broken cement slabs, Abu Breika expressed his dismay, stating, “The world’s conscience is dead.” He emphasized that Gaza residents have been enduring “death and destruction” for the past three months.
“This is the third month that we are facing death and destruction, what guilt did we do? Seventy percent of the deaths are children, what did they do wrong? This is ethnic cleansing, complete destruction for Gaza Strip to displace the whole population,” he said.
Israel asserts that its instructions to evacuate are part of measures aimed at protecting civilians while targeting Hamas militants. The Israeli military’s actions are in response to an Oct. 7 cross-border attack by Hamas militants, which resulted in the killing of 1,200 people and the taking of 240 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Approximately 100 hostages have been freed since the attack.
According to the Gaza health ministry, Israel’s retaliatory assault has led to the death of 18,205 people and the injury of nearly 50,000.
