UNAMA condemns Taliban’s prolonged detention of women’s rights activists in Afghanistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed serious concern on Thursday regarding the “extended and arbitrary” detentions of women’s rights activists by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

UNAMA reported that four women’s rights activists have been apprehended by the Taliban in Kabul since September 19.

“We call on Afghanistan’s de facto authorities (Taliban) to ensure rights to health care, family visits, and legal representation are protected and fulfilled,” UNAMA stated.

The organization reiterated the importance of upholding freedom of opinion and expression in accordance with international human rights obligations.

This announcement comes as activists, including Zhulia Parsi, Neda Parwani, Manizha Seddiqi, and Parisa Azada, remain in Taliban custody since September. A recent report by Human Rights Watch revealed that additional activists, whose names have not been disclosed, are also detained by the Taliban.
