Afghanistan: Nearly 700 people killed in floods this year

The Taliban-controlled National Disaster Management Authority reported on Monday that so far this year, approximately 700 people have lost their lives in floods across different provinces, with more than 700 others sustaining injuries.

According to the authority, the floods have also displaced 100,000 people and caused destruction to 59,000 acres of agricultural land. Moreover, 25,000 houses have been reported as destroyed.

The hardest-hit regions are eleven provinces across the country, where devastating floods have wreaked havoc in recent days.

Residents of Kabul, Maidan Wardak, Kunar, and a number of other provinces were not spared from the damage of these floods.

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s statistics indicate that in the past year, the group has recorded 480 incidents of landmine explosions, resulting in 180 deaths and 310 injuries.

Last week, UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) released a report stating that, in the last two months alone, at least 15 people were killed and 49 injured in attacks caused by improvised explosive devices, with the “overwhelming” majority of victims being civilians.

International organizations have also warned that Afghanistan’s agricultural products are facing serious damage this year due to a combination of drought, floods, and locust infestations.
