Iran’s foreign minister has stressed the need for serious attention to be paid to the threat posed by terrorist groups in Afghanistan, warning that failing to address these movements will have adverse consequences for the region and the world.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian conveyed this message during a meeting with the UN Secretary General’s special coordinator for Afghanistan Feridun Sinirlioğlu, emphasizing that combating terrorism and establishing an inclusive government are crucial to resolving Afghanistan’s challenges.
He emphasized the urgency of finding solutions for Afghanistan, stating, “Immediate action is required for Afghanistan. If the international community fails to give due attention to the security challenges posed by terrorist groups, the negative consequences will extend beyond the region.”
Farhad Abrar, an expert in international relations, commented on Iran’s concerns about the Taliban’s relations with the United States, stating, “Iran has long regarded this as a destabilizing factor in the region and is now indirectly cautioning the Taliban not to overlook the region in its dealings with the United States.”
Iran’s foreign minister also stressed that the establishment of an inclusive government holds the key to addressing the current situation in Afghanistan, echoing the global community’s aspirations.
“Within the dire political and security situation in Afghanistan, the oppressed and the screams of tyranny resonate,” lamented Masouda Kohistani, a women’s rights activist. “Half of the Afghan population has been silenced, buried alive for being women.”
In a separate meeting, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, conveyed to Sinirlioglu the importance of supporting regional initiatives to resolve the Afghanistan problem.
Qomi highlighted regional consensus on cooperative engagement with the Taliban, counterterrorism efforts, and narcotics control.
Moreover, Sohail Shahin, the head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, revealed his meeting with the chargé d’affaires of the French embassy for Afghanistan, where they discussed health and other matters. However, no further details have been released by the French embassy regarding this meeting.
