A female doctor was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, local sources told Amu TV on Tuesday.
The doctor, identified as Gulalai, was killed Sunday night at her home in the Sheikh Misri area of Surkh Rod district, according to the sources.
Gulalai was originally from Pachir Aw Agam district of Nangarhar, the sources said.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility.
Taliban have not publicly commented on the incident.
The killing adds to concerns about security and the safety of professionals in Afghanistan, where attacks on doctors, teachers, religious figures and former government employees have periodically been reported since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Female health workers play a critical role in Afghanistan’s healthcare system, particularly in providing medical services to women and children. International organizations have repeatedly warned that insecurity, restrictions on women and shortages of trained staff continue to strain the country’s health sector.
Further details about the circumstances of Gulalai’s death were not immediately available.
