Afghanistan’s embassy in Kuwait has come under Taliban control following the departure of the country’s ambassador, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the matter.
The sources told Amu TV that Sayed Jawed Hashemi, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Kuwait under the former republic government, ended his tenure about a month ago, leaving the mission fully under Taliban administration.
According to the sources, the Taliban appointed one of their diplomats as first secretary at the embassy two years ago. Since then, their role within the mission has steadily grown, culminating in its full control of the embassy following Hashemi’s departure.
It was not immediately clear whether Kuwait has formally accepted the change or recognized Taliban-appointed diplomats at the mission.
Since returning to power, Taliban have gradually assumed control of a growing number of Afghanistan’s embassies and consulates, often after diplomats appointed by the former government resigned, retired or reached arrangements with Taliban authorities.
Several countries have continued diplomatic engagement with Taliban and, in some cases, allowed Taliban-appointed representatives to take charge of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions.
The international community has repeatedly called on the Taliban to respect the rights of women and girls, revoke their laws and decrees against women, and comply with Afghanistan’s obligations under international law.
