Unidentified gunmen killed at least seven civilians and wounded 13 others in the western province of Herat on Friday, a spokesman for the Taliban’s Interior Ministry said.

Abdul Mateen Qanay said the attack took place in Injil district of Herat, where assailants on motorcycles approached a floodplain area in the village of Qabrezon and opened fire on civilians gathered there. The site is known as a recreational area where residents often assemble on Fridays.

Qanay said the casualty figures were based on preliminary information and that some of the wounded were in critical condition. He added that an initial investigation was underway.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The shooting drew condemnation from former President Hamid Karzai, who described the assault as “inhumane” in a post on X. He said the victims included civilians, among them women and children.
