Taliban’s refugees ministry said in a statement that 426 Afghan nationals have been released from prisons in Pakistan and returned to Afghanistan over the past week.

The ministry did not specify the reasons for their arrests.

The individuals had spent between one day and two months in custody, the statement said. All were returned through the Spin Boldak border crossing in southern Afghanistan.

Pakistani authorities have not publicly commented on the releases.

The status of the country’s detainees abroad has drawn recurring criticism in recent years, particularly since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Analysts say the absence of widely recognized diplomatic representation and limited consular access have contributed to uncertainty surrounding Afghans held in foreign countries.

The ministry has not provided further details about the identities of those released or whether additional nationals remain in detention.
