Sultan Ali Keshtmand, a former prime minister of Afghanistan during the 1980s, has died at the age of 90, according to people close to him.
Keshtmand served two terms as prime minister, first from 1981 to 1988 under President Babrak Karmal and later from 1989 to 1990 under President Mohammad Najibullah.
He was also a senior member of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), the ruling communist party during the Soviet-backed government.
Keshtmand was born in May 1935 in the Chahar Dehi area of Kabul.
After the collapse of Najibullah’s government in the early 1990s, Keshtmand left Afghanistan, first moving to Russia and later settling in the United Kingdom.
