Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was wounded in his leg in what is believed to have been an assassination attempt on Thursday, a senior aide confirmed.
Video footage on social media shows Khan waving to supporters from the back of a truck while leading a protest rally when shots rang out.
Speaking to AFP, Raoof Hasan, an aide to Khan, said the former prime minister had been shot in the leg but was in a stable condition.
According to Hasan, Khan’s convoy came under fire in the country’s east – where he had been leading a protest march on Islamabad to demand snap elections.
“He is in a stable condition,” Hasan told AFP, adding: “This was an attempt to kill him, to assassinate him.”
“He is stable. The bullet hit his leg. He is being shifted to a hospital in Lahore,” Asad Umar, former finance minister and Khan’s party leader, told a TV channel.
Another party leader, Imran Ismail, said that Khan had been shot in the leg “three to four” times.
Speaking to Bol TV, Ismail said that he was next to Khan when the attacker opened fire with an AK-47.
Local TV footage showed the former prime minister being moved into a vehicle after the incident with the help of other people present at the scene.
